DRUG PREVENTION SEMINAR

November 20, 2018
Diokno Auditorium

It's been a week long event on drug awareness, starting with photo contests and now a seminar. This was one of the events I was very excited about not only because there was free food but also because drugs is a hot topic. Every day the highlight of the news circulate around the selling and usage of illegal drugs and of buy bust operations.

At the start, even before entering the venue I had a mental list of all the questions I wanted to ask. Unfortunately, I did not squeak one little bit. It was not because I was shy like my usual reason, this time it was because the speaker already answered it or another student asked it or I couldn't construct a proper sentence. That is why, as much as possible, try to write down the questions so that you may be able to take notes and if brave enough and you want to learn more, you can raise the question without hesitation.

(Photo not mine) We were instructed to not use phone during the seminar.
The speaker was American, Ms. Mary Bernnan.
She had been traveling to over 60 countries in her life, sharing her knowledge on drugs, sexual assault, and addiction. For the record, she is a licensed counselor of the field.
The participants were a collection of college students and junior high school students. (If ever anyone wonders why senior high school students are not included- they had their intramurals)

These are a few shocking things I learned from the seminar:
1. Alcohol is the most dangerous drug.
2. The only responsible way of consuming alcohol is by eating and drinking.
3. Never lie to a medical practitioner.
4. Drugs do not counter act each other.
5. The Markadi, aka the beverage with the highest alcohol content is three times cheaper in the Philippines than in USA.
6. Your liver has not reached its maximum potential until the age of 22-23.

Sadly, I was cut off with the idea that it was a seminar to prevent drug usage in workplace. It came out more like an awareness lecture on drugs. Nevertheless, the seminar was great in terms of subject, food, venue, and kudos to the interactive speaker, Ms. Mary Berrnan

There were a few ideas that have great impact in my opinion.
1. "If you have information, you are empowered"
2. "The courage to do what's right even when it's not easy" - This is the lesson of preventing drug addiction.
3. "The most intelligent people in the world have mastered the ability to say: 'I don't know'"- When heard out of context, it may sound absurd, but what it really wants to say is that you have a genuine curious mind and it is open-minded to learn.
4. "Silence equals death". - Now that you have the awareness, go forth and share it to others. Ignorance is not accepted.
