SILAKBO is an annual event conducted by the senior psychology students as part of their requirements for the course subject, Current Issues In Psychology. It is a training on how to organize
seminars and translating jargon psychology knowledge to the greater many using terms and lessons that more can understand. Because as said in our Scientific Communication course, one reason for gathering scientific data is not only for personal use but for awareness and talk of all. The sure audience that we anticipated months before, were psychology students, however to my opinion, it would have been better if it were a different set of people, those who are not yet familiar to the lessons we hear everyday. Nevertheless, we had to continue with the seminar with the fellow psychology students because it seemed as if other students taking other courses were not really
interested.

It was a three part seminar, and our section was assigned as the second group to be conducted in the afternoon. The first seminar was about burnout. From the introduction of the speaker I nearly
had my face in my palm, for I judged her right there and then. She was a recent graduate and fortunately became a topnotcher in the 2018 psychometrician test. Furthermore, I felt that since she was literally only a few months older than us, what does she plan on sharing.

She started her introduction of terms, the way that authors of thesis do, reciting the source of each description, the way she spoke was engaging (thank her wide vocabulary and pleasant intonations), but I still wasn't convinced that she can pull-off a seminar worth remembering. It was all like that until - I could not think of not taking down notes, and jotting the differences between stressed, burnout and depression. Everything I learned in the past just cleared. Those potholes in lessons that I will just set aside actually were paved and gave the road mind a straight journey.

Here are some of the things worth sharing, as it feels like a responsibility:
  1. Stress is a college culture, is it not?
  2. Busy does not always mean productive.
  3. Do not confuse burnout with depression although there are similar symptoms, the great and significant difference is that with burnout you feel lack of motivation on the other hand, depression you have anhedonia (inability to experience pleasure.)
  4. There are also major differences between stress and burnout. When is stressed, the individual can transform the experience into motivation, in addition it is more about emotions rather than physical like for  burnout, where one completely surrenders.
  5. Causes of burnout: a) Situational (demands, resources) like the concept of economics. b) Individual Factors (Socioeconomic status, Personality Variables.)
  6. How to Combat burnout: a) Find a means to release the problems like writing it down (then one may also be able to see them presented.) b) Learn to say 'no'. (there are limits and that's okay) c) take a break (take a Kit-Kat) d) seek help and support. (Even Sherlock Holmes had a John Watson)
As cliche as it sounds, do not judge a book by its cover. Effective and successful seminar it was.
