WALANG IBIG SABIHIN

July 5, 2019
LBX Studio, Big Ben, Lipa City

There was a power interruption on the 6th so they added one on the 5th.

The Lipa Actors Company performed a contemporary play entitled WIS: Walang Ibig Sabihin.

WIS is a recital play of the theater apprentices brought by the Summer Arts Batangas Program. This was an opportunity for the aspiring actors/actresses and production crew to be learn from the members of the Lipa Actors Company who served as their mentors.

My friends, Paula and Ian, and I were glad to have witnessed the local talents. This play was introduced to me by the members of  Teatro Lasalyano of De La Salle Lipa, which of whom we had a collaboration on the play Babaeng sa Gitnang Tag-araw two months ago. (You may read about being part of the production crew here) Coincidentally, I bumped into many of the cast and crew from the production of BSGT, some were joined in the audience and others braved their pursuit as an apprentice.

The story is based in 70's and concerns the family's crazy whereabouts. It touches social topics as every character has a conflict that they each try to resolve. As the director had mentioned before the play started, it will tackle bits of social, economic, and political issues from the past to the present, thus making it a bit boring. However, it was not a bit dull, actually it was pretty engaging. The sounds, the actors, the dialogues were brilliantly combined.

There was just a bit of misunderstanding on the parts of the story and where it all connects. Which was resolved when the performance ended. There was sort of a question and answer-feedback portion wherein the audience has the chance to question, recommend, or comment on the play. This is to help improve the play for the next performances and to settle any hanging thoughts. One man raised the question on  the relationship between the two parts of the play, whether it was a whole different segment or a continuation. Whereas, one of the actresses, explained the concept of contemporary play, meaning, there is no meaning or Walang Ibig Sabihin. (Pun intended.) The interpretation depends on the audience. The story can mean something else for the performer, and another for the audience.

And with that I give a few thoughts about the play as well as realizations:
  1. Local talent is rich. Let's support and appreciate.
  2. Theater is underrated, not because its bad but because it's not everyone's cup of tea. This is depicted more in the Korean Series, Introverted Boss. He explains that there is a niche of theater lovers and the rest of the population may not be so interested.
  3. Some actors/actresses I recognized, some I had no idea it was actually them. Some acted as the character should and some took the character into themselves and formed a whole new person - which is what they call novelty. I felt like a director scouting for the next big star.
  4. It's a small world after all - As mentioned above, there were some unexpected reunions, and the play becomes a way for such to take place.
There was a lot of aha moments, it's a good thing they had the discussion at the end to resolve the thoughts.

The purpose of life is inexplainable, it could be because you'll need millions of words or it could be because there really isn't anything to explain at all.
